Can Babies Have an Allergic Reaction to Diapers?

Right after being born up to 15 months, a baby wears a diaper 24/7 which is something they deserve to be applauded for. As much as it is a necessity, it can be a nuisance for them as well. Every 1 out of 3 babies suffers from diaper rash once in a couple of months. With many possible reasons, diapers are the most common reason.

TYPES OF RASHES:

Following is the list of allergic rashes that can be caused by diapers

IRRITANT DERMATITIS: Allergies caused by feces and urine are the most frequent type of nappy rash. Generally, they look red and shiny as well as you can feel warm when you touch them. This rash mostly happens around the genitals, thighs, and stomach. These rashes can be treated by over-the-counter creams and ointments that contain zinc oxide or are petroleum-based. These ointments act as a barrier to your skin even before the rash starts.

CANDIDA DERMATITIS: This allergy is related to yeast as ‘Candida’ is a form of a ‘yeast’. These types of rashes have deep red color and appear as patches around the diaper area. This allergy mostly appears on the folds or creases of thighs as well as outside the diaper area. Red dots emerge around the main area of redness.

ALLERGIC DERMATITIS: This type of rash is not very common but some babies might experience an allergy to some components present in diapers or wipes. This allergic dermatitis may appear after 1-3 weeks of first exposure to that particular component in diapers or wipes. These diaper rashes are commonly red, shiny and might emerge on areas like genitals, buttocks, abdomen, and thighs. First, you have to figure out what type of allergy it is and then eliminate the allergen that is causing the rash. It may take 2-4 weeks for the rash to clear. Many OTC diaper creams can be helpful but creams that are fragrance-free and hypoallergenic can particularly be very much helpful.

BACTERIAL DERMATITIS: Because of warm or moist conditions within the diapers, can change a small skin infection into a serious rash. The most common causes of skin infection are group A Streptococcus and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The rash caused by Strep is bright red and mostly around the anus area that can spread to the genitals.

OTHER TYPES OF RASHES:

Other than the above-mentioned types of rashes, diapers can cause these allergies also:

  • Eczema
  • Psoriasis
  • Seborrheic Dermatitis
  • Impetigo
  • Heat rash
