Green Friday? Why You Should Consider Shopping Sustainably This Black Friday

For many people, Black Friday has become an annual tradition of getting up early, braving the cold, and standing in long lines to get the best deals on holiday gifts. But what if there was a way to shop for those gifts without contributing to the waste and pollution that comes along with conventional Black Friday shopping? Enter: Green Friday.

What is Green Friday?

Green Friday is a relatively new concept that started in 2015, which encourages people to shop for holiday gifts in a more sustainable and conscious way. This can mean anything from shopping secondhand, supporting businesses that practice eco-friendly manufacturing, to buying from local and small businesses, which helps more of your money stays in your community. That's good for the local economy and good for the environment, since goods don't have to be shipped as far.  Essentially, it's a way to reduce your impact on the environment while still getting great deals on holiday gifts.

Why Should You Participate?

There are several good reasons to participate in Green Friday.

First and foremost, as we mentioned, it's good for the local economy and the environment. Small businesses are the backbone of any community, and when you support them, you're helping to create jobs.

Second, the manufacturing process for many products, takes a toll on the environment. Therefore, it is important to support businesses that have sustainability as a top priority. Additionally, buying from small businesses helps to reduce your carbon footprint.

Third, participating in Green Friday can help you connect with your community in a meaningful way. When you buy from small businesses, you often get to meet the owners and learn their stories. That personal connection is something you can't get from buying online or at a big chain store.

How Can You Shop This Green Friday?

Here are some ideas on how to start:

1- Plan before you buy. If you plan what you want/need beforehand, you are less likely to impulse buy or be caught up in the Black Friday hype. Make a list, check it twice, and be thoughtful about your purchases!

2- Support businesses that practice eco-friendly manufacturing. Do some research to find brands that produce sustainable products using recycled materials or renewable energy sources, which helps reduce pollution and conserve resources. You can also look for businesses that offset their carbon emissions or donate a portion of their profits to environmental causes.

3-Shop local, This holiday season, consider visiting small shops in your city or a local Christmas market. You will be able to find unique gifts for your loved ones.

4- Buy quality products, Not only will quality products last longer and have less of an impact on our planet, but you'll save money in the long run too! Its important to think about how an item was made and who made it when deciding what is worth your money.

5- Buying second hand – Have you ever shop at a thrift store? If you have not, maybe this is a great moment to try.  In addition to finding unique and one-of-a-kind items, shopping at second hand stores also benefits the environment. It's often more budget friendly and supports small, local businesses.
